In this case, the operator is able to define different tool lengths for same operation, providing greater rigidity, reduced vibration & increase tool life. By automatically splitting the Z levels, different step down & step over parameters can be defined for each Z range. Core Roughing - A new roughing algorithm has been developed with an improved toolpath shape when working from outside a component. The new toolpath will dramatically reduce the number of rapid movements, allow the use of more than 50% step over of the flat area of the cutter and improve calculation time. The result is a flowing toolpath that allows the machine to run near to its maximum potential when machining core components. HM Constant Z - This toolpath is very similar to steep & shallow and combines all the benefits of a traditional constant Z operation with a highly sophisticated 3D pocketing routine for planar areas. The new CAM algorithm uses a 2D pocketing projection for the intermediate planar areas instead of a true 3D stepover and the results produce dramatic time savings. Rib Machining - This new strategy has been designed specifically to resolve the issue of machining very thin rib walls. The typical approach of using multiple operations runs the risk of damaging the part, specifically towards the end of the process when the rib is subjected to high frequency vibrations and micro-flexes. To overcome these issues the Rib Machining algorithm combines the new roughing algorithm with a new finishing routine to ensure the highest part-rigidity possible by roughing and finishing each level individually working down the model. VISI PEPS-Wire development has continued with new technology added and further migration of historic PEPS capabilities to the new VISI platform. These include slug retention, feature recognition for land and taper features, CT Expert integration, VDM file import and pocketing with finishing allowance, a new routine that allows the user to partially pocket an aperture by specifying the remaining stock left to cut. Due for a summer release, VISI 18 is another substantial release with many new features in all areas of the product with a continued focus on tool design and manufacture. VISI Modelling is the base platform for all VISI products and version 18 delivers an updated GUI with graphic sliders that allow the user to dynamically interact with the working area to push or pull features and apply other system commands. One major CAD development is the introduction of geometry deformation tools that provide a technical leap forward and deliver exciting new features such as complex spring back deformation, draft application and organic shape editing. These new features will greatly benefit existing users who have to adapt customer data and also support more aesthetic markets such as product design or cosmetics. VISI Machining has been updated with a number of tools to further enhance the automated Compass Technology including a new method to manage the smallest distance between two or more sides of a geometric feature. Other developments include new options for body interference checking and also a new tool to automatically create the hard inserts for die plates and apply relief holes to the corners. Finally, Vero have extended their partnership with CADENAS and have integrated PartSolutions V9 into the tooling suite, VISI Mould and VISI Progress. VISI 18 completes the full integration of VISI Flow and now the plastic injection analysis and simulation can be launched and calculated from directly within VISI, eliminating the need of model preparation for analysis. Importantly, the calculation results are also visible within the same CAD environment providing the perfect toolset for comparing the original model against the warped prediction data after the moulding process. VISI Flow also includes the ability to work with shell models and introduces a virtual resin laboratory that allows users to create and test different kinds of resin grades. The latest developments see further emphasis on end-user productivity in all areas of the product. The system graphics have been dramatically improved after major development collaboration with both AMD and Nvidia. The use of VBO's (vertex buffer objects) on the ATI FirePro and Nvidia GeForce graphics boards have returned exceptional software gains. In benchmark testing, results have shown the frame-per-second (FPS) rate jump from 5.5 > 146.2 for a 70MB dataset and 9.9 > 238.1 for a 118MB dataset. CAD enhancements include model thickness analysis which allows the user to quickly identify the thickest and thinnest areas of the model and help validate the model integrity, highlighting any potential areas that may cause internal voids, surface sink marks, unpredictable shrink rates and ultimately, longer cycle times. Further developments include intelligent body/face mating, improved annotation, updated printing and numerous improvements to the management of drawing files. One of the more significant is the ability to import pages from other work files and re-build the link between the solid geometry. This allows multiple users to share the same 3D design with each designer creating their own drawing pages - adding views, sections, annotations, balloons etc on separate workstations. When the pages have been completed, they can be loaded back into the master file and all links to the original 3D data are reconnected. CAM developments include enhancements to geometry feature recognition with the ability to recognise complex and simple holes on both solid & surface models. The feature recognition has also been extended to recognise features from a predefined direction and find features within a localised user-defined region. The separation of passes & linking will dramatically increase productivity and reduce calculation time. The user will now be able to inspect the toolpath quality before building the HSM linking movements. Continued development on the CAM engine have produced time saving results of over 80% reduction in calculation time for combined waterline, 30% reduction for rest machining and over 15% reduction for raster clearance. Incremental stock, automatic toolpath tilting and further improvements to multi axis machining guarantees another step forward for Vero's innovative CAM solution. VISI Flow has been further developed with the emphasis placed on the continued integration of plastic flow technology into a real CAD environment. VISI Flow uses a patented hexahedral hybrid mesh technology to provide accurate results with analyses run directly from the CAD model. If you just look at the modelling aspects (we’ll get onto the really meaty cutting metal related portion next month), then it’s incredibly powerful. Today’s CAD users are more discerning that ever before. We’re all used to the ability to work quickly and efficiently with geometry, and while the majority are certainly using one of the mainstream midrange modelling tools, when you’re dealing with import data or working with complex surfaces, you’ll quickly run into the one problem those types of systems have (and let’s be clear, I’m talking about SolidWorks, Solid Edge, Inventor et al). Those systems work best with native data, because they’ve been designed as authoring systems with the end goal being a 3D model or a 2D drawing derived from it. A system like VISI (and there are others in the same class) differs in that the end goal is a production model on the back of which machining or tooling design is going to take place. When you focus on the mould and die market, the processes often rely on your ability to analyse, validate and fix the geometry your client provides, then to ensure that you create the best mould tool you can – because production success is directly attributable back to that underlying geometry. While VISI has all of those surface-based modelling tools you’d need, the system also has a massive range of tools that support the entire process, whether that be mould design or electrode extraction and design, as well as supporting the creation of production drawings in a very automated manner. While it’s not recognised as a standalone modelling tool, but as part of a bigger, more fully encompassing offering, I’m pretty damn sure that VISI could take the Pepsi challenge with any other modelling system on the market today – and win. Some you leave thinking “Ok, good. But where is the innovation?” Others you leave impressed with their dedication to their users and to advancing the use of their products. Vero Software is always of this latter group. VISI has been an impressive system for many years, but in the last few release cycles the company has really cranked up the development cycle a gear or two. Compared to when I first saw the system, VISI today is supremely impressive. Not only does it have a wealth of knowledge and years of user-led development behind it, but also the work done recently to both refresh the user interface and to introduce new technology. The perfect example of both aspects working in concert are the new automation or intelligence-based tools which capture best practice and standard forms and allow users to create them in a very short space of time (whether that’s cooling channels, mould locks, mould stack design or NC operations). Taken as a whole, VISI is one of the most impressive products out there for those engaged in manufacturing. It’s got all the 3D CAD tools you could ever need, backed up with some highly impressive mould and die design tools which can then be followed through into production with the NC programming tools that have been its core competency for some time.
